Sharing the moment of noticing- Revaluing our lives
I chose to call myself Miria Miria considering it is gender and socially neutral and transcends nationalities. I am also against stereotypical prejudgments we make based on a name.
I do not try to make something beautiful. Rather, I try to bring material-self to the fore or to express the seen in the best suited way. If some of my works look beautiful that is only because what the materials are, or just a reflection of my empathy collaborating with the materials.
I worked on the notions of 'Mending' and 'Planetarity' before moving to 'Noticing the Unnoticed' to challenge our values and capitalistic ideology.
This gallery is my most recent art project taking place in the Northeast of England town Redcar where I met several local artists who gave me physical and emotional support plus the neighbours who have been kind and welcomed me to West Terrace, Redcar.
The gallery is a place to support all contemporary artists to raise their voices and express their thoughts about current issues directly to the public and those in authority.
When I was studying art in London so long ago, I used to be very intrigued by the windows that I could see from the train. Those windows with light in the dark looked so close as if I could reach out to touch them. It even seemed as if they were inviting me in, yet at the same time, the people and lives behind the windows existed far far away from me.
Currently, we are hosting a retrospective exhibition entitled 'A Light In A Window' at the Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery by Wendy Elizabeth Lowrey, the mother of Icarus Wilson-Wright, the light installation director for the opening of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. For the last few years before she passed away, her bed was brought into her art studio, and she kept sketching till the end of her life. Her studio window, which was always lit, was the object of curiosity for all those who passed by.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to meet Wendy, a person with a great sense of humour but learning about her made me want to revisit my window paintings.
We would welcome and appreciate your visit to the gallery to see my work. You can telephone the gallery at 01642307450 or email to make an appointment.
