Windows - evoked
昔、ロンドンでアートの勉強をしていた頃、速度を落とした列車の窓越しに見えるビルの窓がとても気になりました。暗い闇に電気が着いた窓は手も届きそうな位、すぐ目の前にあります。その窓の明かりはまるで私を窓の中に招き入れてくれるようでもありました。しかし窓の中の生活も人も私からは、またずっと遠くの存在でもあるのです。
When I was studying art in London so long ago, I used to be very intrigued by the windows that I could see from the train. Those windows with light in the dark looked so close as if I could reach out to touch them. It even seemed as if they were inviting me in, yet at the same time, the people and lives behind the windows existed far far away from me.
今、ギャラリーでは ‘A Light In A Window’ というタイトルで、テイトモダンのターバインホール、オープニング時にライトインスタレーションを受け持ったイカラスさんのお母さまのウェンディ、エリザベス、ローリーの回顧展をしています。亡くなる前の数年間はアートスタジオにベッドを移して、最期までベッドでスケッチを続けたそうです。いつも電気が着いた窓は、周りの人たちの好奇心の対象でした。
Currently, we are hosting a retrospective exhibition entitled 'A Light In A Window' at the Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery by Wendy Elizabeth Lowrey, the mother of Icarus Wilson-Wright, the light installation director for the opening of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. For the last few years before she passed away, her bed was brought into her art studio, and she kept sketching till the end of her life. Her studio window, which was always lit, was the object of curiosity for all those who passed by.
ユーモアいっぱいのウェンディさんにお会いする機会はありませんでしたが、何だかもう一度以前手掛けていた窓シリーズの絵が描きたくなりました。
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to meet Wendy, a person with a great sense of humour but learning about her made me want to revisit my window paintings.
